JHouse
Residential Design // 2016 // Quezon City
The project was a bungalow renovation situated in Quezon City. The client was a distinguished academic who wanted to renovate his home after a long time. The design focused on the wealth of experience accumulated through the years as expressed by memorabilia and objects.
It also asked the question, “Can the project influence a community’s perception of a house?”. While the project easily stood out from its cookie cutter surrounding, it endeavours visitors’ gaze to move away from the building form and focus on its interiors which tried to achieve an integrated sustainable design approach.
The house offsetted inwards creating an interior setback to protect the interior rooms from the harsh afternoon sun. From this, a comfortably sloped ramp became the main circulation for the house. It also provided the client a nostalgic gallery housing his photographs, prints and memorabilia. There is also a green wall on the warmest side of the ramp which would be home for herbs and other air purifying flora carefully selected by the client.
The integration of sustainable strategies into the program created interesting opportunities for design. The feature ramp is not only layered with functionality. It is also a clever way of keeping the client healthy by allowing him to do his daily jog in the comforts of his home.
