Mt. Banahao de Lucban Botanic Garden
Masterplan // Landscape // 2016 // Quezon Province
The main idea for the project was to rehabilitate the former kaingin site and at the same time create a deterrent for illegal treks and activities into the Mt. Banahao de Lucban. The botanic garden allowed the South Luzon State University to monitor activities in the area. It is not only a tourism destination but the botanic garden also enabled them to establish research opportunities which is relevant to the conservation of the Mt. Banahao and the environment as a whole.
How do you make people visit gardens more?
Normally, one visit to a botanic garden is enough. Hence the project became a very good opportunity to use architecture to influence the community towards benefiting the project and vice versa. It also became the platform to introduce the community towards the idea of sustainability.
The Mount Banahaw de Lucban Botanic Garden Project paved the way for the team to experience and understand Lucban. It was a wonderful opportunity to work with the team from the South Luzon State University as well. It allowed the team to appreciate the importance of architecture and nature; and architecture in nature. Perhaps architecture can be a bridge between man and nature rather than a wedge between them? The project opened the possibility of more architecture projects that could explore this idea.
